Day 1

I’ve thought about creating a website for a while - once I worked to build them from scratch. This time I’ve decided to try using SquareSpace, so most of the headaches are their problem. I want a store and a blogging space. We’ll see how it goes.

I chose one of the dominant templates (Hester) to start with. I was pretty quickly banging my head against a wall. After reading some online info, I realized SquareSpace 7.1 templates might not be for me. It is massively customizable, and rather confusing. After reading this post on Sarah Moon & Co I realized it wasn’t just the moisture behind my ears that was giving me fits. So I decided to switch to 7.0.

In order to switch to a 7.0 (and more familiar) template, I had to

  1. Create another trial site

  2. Purchase another subscription for the new site.

  3. Transfer my domain name to the new site.

  4. Cancel my subscription to the old site. (Luckily this wasn’t difficult or worrisome, but I did have to google where to find access to cancelling my site.)

Hopefully, after losing a day and a half of work, I can now move forward with my 7.0 site. Luckily I have almost zero content on the old site, so nothing lost there. If I had more content there, it would be a bigger headache. If you’re starting a brand new site on SquareSpace, you might consider scrolling to the bottom of all the initial “popular templates” and clicking on “templates from an earlier version.” Or at least do some serious trial work with the site before you subscribe and lock yourself into 7.1.

So now we’ll see what happens! I’m not as savvy as I used to be with computers and such things, but I’m hoping I can create something online that makes me (and you!) happy. I trust eventually it will become second nature.

I’m going ahead and making my growing pains public, because, well, why not?

See you soon!
